On Monday(july 17/07/2023) , Ethiopia is planting 500 million trees in a single day

Many of citizens are expected to participate in the campaign which will start at 12:00 am and continue till 12:00 pm.

This is the Green Sign movement that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been making for the past four years to reverse the deterioration of the country’s forests. This year’s campaign will be marked by the planting of food trees outside the trees. The move comes at a time when global temperatures have risen sharply due to climate change.

In addition, a monitoring center has been established to enable direct monitoring of the number of trees planted. In 2011, 350 million trees were planted daily. This idea, however, has not been confirmed by an independent body.

Addis Ababa, July 17, 2023 – Ethiopia is regaining its forest coverage and greenery through the continuing initiative of Green Legacy, African Leadership Excellence Academy (AFLEX) Chief Mehret Debebe said.

As portion of the national campaign to plant 500 million trees in one day, staff of the academy have planted 1000 indigenous tree seedlings today.

The college chief told ENA that the initiative has multifaceted benefits not only to Ethiopia but also to the continent and the entire world, in terms of environmental protection.

According to him, this year’s target of planting 500 million seedlings will initiate the attitude of believing it can be done.


Ethiopia is setting the bar for other African countries, Mehret said, adding that it will also set the example for the upcoming generation.

“We are planting indigenous trees in millions, but they were waiting like seeds… So, the seed is waiting for people to come and put it in the soil and take it to the right place as a seedling and plant it. Then it will return our investment by being a shed, fruit and changing our climate,” he elaborated.

Furthermore, the chief pointed out that this has to continue in order to see the desired change.

Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative over the last four years has mobilized 25 million Ethiopians across the nation to plant 25 billion seedlings, the same to 250 seedlings per head. Many believe that it is the most extensive afforestation and reforestation program next to the Amazon.

Ambassador of China to Ethiopia Zhao Zhiyuan said that Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative is crucial for the country’s sustainable development. Chinese Ambassador and staff have planted tree seedlings on Embassy’s premises.

Ambassador Zhao said China is committed to sustainable development and to the principle of prioritizing resource conservation and environmental protection. Appreciating Ethiopia’s pursuit of green and sustainable development the ambassador said Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative which corresponds China’s ecological civilization is part of Chinese path towards modernization.

“By planting trees throughout the country, Ethiopians will combat the effects of climate change, restore degraded landscapes and forests, promote a green culture and ecotourism, and improve the livelihoods of Ethiopians, Ambassador Zhao added.

He said the pursuit of green and sustainable development makes today’s activity possible.

“Joined by both the Chinese Embassy staff and our Ethiopian friends, just as the Chinese saying goes; a tree planted now will provide shade for future generations; That means to leave a lasting legacy And I believe the lasting legacy for all humanity is a green legacy”, the ambassador further stated.

Director General Middle East, Asia and Pacific Countries Affairs, Ambassador Gebeyehu Ganga said on his part, Green Legacy Initiative is a demonstration of Ethiopia’s long-term commitment to a multifaceted response to the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation.
